SONG: Someday I'll Never Learn

Blues Man Murray Porter's music career has taken him all over the world for the last 40 years. He's a proud Mohawk man from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory in southern Ontario, who now lives on Squamish Nation territory in North Vancouver, British Columbia.

Murray may have a blues soul to the core, but he also grew up on rock and roll, R & B and country music. Porter's first CD since his 2012 JUNO Award for 'Aboriginal Album of the Year' is titled, STAND UP! and reflects these early musical influences. He strongly feels that this next album is some of his best music to date.

His new music is a little bit of protest songs, a little bit of love songs, and a little bit of fun songs. Murray's well respected in both the Indigenous and Blues music communities. His voice is as smooth as a velvet growl.

The new songs address many issues facing Indigenous People today including, 'No More' (Idle No More movement), 'Highway 16' (Murdered & Missing Indigenous Women & Girls), 'Don't Let Go' (Suicide prevention), 'The Water' (State of the water today in Indigenous communities), 'In the Same Canoe' (Unity amongst all People). Plus, in true Murray Porter fashion, he has some tongue-in-cheek songs and heartfelt songs about Love, with 'Please Stay Gone', 'Some Day I'll Never Learn', 'Two Hearts One Soul', and 'Love Will Find a Way'.

Whether he is playing an intimate venue for local blues fans, as a solo, duo, trio or with his four-piece band on a festival stage to thousands of music aficionados, Porter's love of performing comes across clear and strong. He has been compared to Dr. John, Joe Cocker and even Elton John! Robbie Robertson has called Porter "a master bluesman". He captivates audiences wherever he performs and makes new fans...and they never leave his show disappointed.

Meet the Band:

Rick Boulter (Guitar and Harmonies) has played in several classic rock and blues bands. He has wide experience in all styles beginning with rock in the eighties, and blues in the nineties. Rick was the Executive Producer for Murray Porter's JUNO award-winning album, Songs Lived & Life Played, for 'Indigenous Album of the Year', and he also engineered and mixed this recording, and played guitar. For STAND UP!, Rick also fulfilled both Executive Producer and guitar player roles He is also a member of SOCAN and a producer and head engineer at Cosmic Pig Studios.

Helene Duguay (Bass and Harmonies) is a legendary bass player, who used to play with 'The Beatlettes', an all female pop band in the 1960s in Montreal. She brings many years experience tearing it up on stages throughout North America and Asia. At seventy-five years of age, Helene shows no sign of slowing down, and can hold her own with the best of them on any stage! Proud of her French/Miqmaq heritage, and fluent in French, she performs at numerous fundraisers for various Indigenous communities and organizations throughout British Columbia. She has been featured on the TV shows, Rez Bluez and The Mix, and several episodes of Beyond Words on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. Helene also performed bass on both Murray Porter's albums. From the girl groups and go-go boots of the sixties and through all the twists and turns in popular music since, Helene plays all styles with authenticity and heart.

Michel Bruyere is one of those rare drummers who can play country, rock, funk and blues with passion and precision, equally well. This Anishinabe drummer has been playing professionally since the early 90s in various bands, such as The C-Weed Band, Eagle & Hawk, Keith Secola, Derek Miller, Bruthers of Different Muthers. He's currently drummer for the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie's band, and has toured internationally with her. Michel also plays drums with Helene and Rick on Murray's new album, STAND UP!
